Team Equality Anyone?

What do hunter-gatherers, Steve Jobs, and Special Forces have in common? Political equality – everyone has an equal say in what’s going on.

Hunter-gatherer bands are famously egalitarian, using satire to keep hunters (think today’s entrepreneurs) grounded. If that doesn’t work, they have stones and spears to reinforce the norm. Steve Jobs took a page from Skunk Works’ playbook, carving out space for small, agile teams to push boundaries away from corporate red tape. The military has its Special Forces and “mission command” – sending authority to where the information is, close to the action, away from HQ.

Want teams that perform at their peak? Try building political equality into your team culture. Be prepared to share in the success too. But this will take a new breed of business leader – equipped with fresh skills, boldness, and humility.
