How do you take your capitalism?

It depends on the adjective you use with it…

Inequitable
Ruthless
Predatory
Corrupt
Exclusionary
Divisive
Destructive
Unsustainable
Unbridled
Cronyism
Self-serving
Materialistic
Extractive The list goes on….

For too long, these negative adjectives have dominated our discussions about capitalism, highlighting its shortcomings and injustices.

If you want to save capitalism, and most people will argue that it’s better than communism, then what about community capitalism?—a paradigm shift away from the exploitation and greed that have marred traditional model.

Where did community capitalism come from?

It emerged from a collective recognition of capitalism’s failures, its tendency to prioritise profit over people and the planet.

It draws inspiration from diverse sources—social movements, ethical philosophers, and innovative entrepreneurs—all advocating for a more humane and sustainable approach to economic development.

So, why should we shift towards community capitalism?

Inclusivity: Community capitalism prioritises inclusivity, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are shared by all members of society, not just a privileged few. It fosters collaboration and breaking down barriers to entry and empowering marginalised communities.

Sustainability: Unlike its extractive counterpart, community capitalism embraces sustainability as a core principle. From renewable energy to regenerative agriculture, community capitalism invests in practices that replenish rather than deplete our natural environment.

Ethical Conduct: At its heart, community capitalism is guided by ethics and integrity. It rejects the notion that profit should come at the expense of human dignity or ethical standards. Instead, it encourages businesses to operate with transparency, fairness, and a genuine commitment to social responsibility.

Robust: By building strong, interconnected communities, community capitalism cultivates resilience in the face of adversity. Whether it’s economic downturns, environmental disasters, or social upheaval, communities bound by shared values and mutual support are better equipped to weather the storm.

Empowerment: Finally, community capitalism empowers individuals to take ownership of their economic destinies. It encourages entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity, providing opportunities for individuals to pursue their passions and contribute meaningfully to society.

In essence, community capitalism offers a vision of capitalism that is not only more just and equitable but also more sustainable and resilient.

It’s a vision worth embracing—a blueprint for a brighter future where prosperity is shared, the planet is preserved, and humanity thrives.
